According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Germany reported 107,913 new COVID-19 cases and 57 new deaths in the last 24 hours. The total number of confirmed Coronavirus cases has reached 14,682,758 and the total number of reported deaths has reached 122,678.

Germany reports 107,913 new cases, 57 deaths from COVID-19

In recent weeks, daily infections neared the quarter million mark in Germany, as the country reported 247,862 new COVID-19 cases, compared with 234,250 the day before, according to the country’s public health authority RKI. Although data indicate that the Omicron variant has been less severe for children, they still face risks including long COVID-19 or inflammatory syndrome. Experts are urging prioritizing kids’ well-being.

It seems the rate of Coronavirus infections during this current omicron wave in Germany has finally passed its peak. As the recent all-time high incidence rate reached nearly 1,500 cases per 100,000 for the entire population, that same incidence for children was more than 3,000, according to Germany’s RKI. In this wave, children were affected by COVID-19 more than ever before.

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has become the deadliest in the country’s history. Government data showed 4,945 confirmed cases and 2,325 deaths as of Aug. 16. Health officials recorded 101 new confirmed cases during the previous 24 hours. The death toll has now surpassed the 2,299 fatalities recorded during the country’s 2018 to 2020 Ebola outbreak. The latest figures deepen concerns raised days earlier as infections and deaths continued climbing across eastern DRC. United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher said the virus was killing one person every 30 minutes. The outbreak has expanded at an exceptional pace since authorities formally announced it in May. Confirmed infections had already surpassed the total recorded during the 2018 to 2020 outbreak by late July, making the current epidemic the country’s largest by case count.
